WHAT IS?

An Electrically Excited Synchronous Motor (EESM) is a type of electric vehicle motor that generates a magnetic field in the rotor using electrical current (windings) rather than relying on permanent magnets. This technology is positioned as a sustainable, rare-earth-free alternative to Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM), which dominate the current EV market. 

Key Characteristics of EESM

• No Rare-Earth Magnets: EESMs eliminate the need for materials like neodymium, reducing environmental impact and supply chain dependency.

• Wound Rotor Design: Instead of magnets, the rotor is wound with copper coils that become electromagnets when energized.

• Dynamic Control: The magnetic field strength can be adjusted by altering the current in the rotor, allowing for better efficiency at high speeds (field weakening) compared to fixed-magnet motors.

• Efficiency: EESMs offer high efficiency, comparable to permanent magnet motors, with some models reporting around 91-92% efficiency. 

Advantages

• Sustainability & Cost: By eliminating rare-earth metals, they are more environmentally friendly and less subject to geopolitical supply chain risks.

• High-Speed Performance: They are highly efficient at high speeds, as the field can be reduced to lower energy consumption.

• Safety: The magnetic field can be completely turned off if a fault occurs, increasing safety. 

Disadvantages & Challenges

• Complexity: They require a more complex rotor winding and a mechanism (like slip rings or brushless exciters) to transfer power to the rotor.

• Heat Management: EESMs can suffer from severe rotor heat limitations, which may require advanced cooling systems.

• Lower Low-Speed Efficiency: Compared to permanent magnet motors, they can be less efficient at low speeds due to the energy required to energize the rotor. 

Automotive Applications

EESMs are currently used in several production vehicles: 

• Renault: Used in the Zoe (since 2012) and Megane E-Tech.

• BMW: Features in the i4, iX3, and iX.

• Nissan: Utilized in the Ariya. 
Future developments, such as Renault's E7A motor (expected 2027), aim to further improve upon these designs, offering higher power outputs (200 kW) and 30% lower carbon impact.
